“Dredd,” which shot and exploded its way into theaters on Sept. 21, has shown that the comic book genre of movies can still be entertaining to adults as well.
The movie is filled with nonstop action and thrills that keep going and going.
“Dredd” is a movie based on the comic book “Judge Dredd.” In 1995, Sylvester Stallone was the star and played the titular character.
This time, the film stars Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, with Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson, a rookie judge with psychic abilities.
It also stars Lena Heady as the villainess Madeline “Ma-Ma” Madrigal, and Wood Harris as Kay, the film’s secondary villain.
The plot of the movie is not very complex, as the movie is not very story driven. Rather than be about the special effects and action sequences, especially if one watches it in 3D.
The plot has to do with Judge Dredd and a rookie judge, who also happens to have psychic abilities, going after a drug lord and having to evade several attempts on their lives. Sound like a complex plot? Didn’t think so.
Watching the movie in 3D shows a lot of effects like bullets flying across the screen, as well as explosions and glass shards flying, not to mention other slow motion sequences.
The special effects were well done, as were the action sequences such as shootouts and chase sequences. There are a lot of well-done special effects, nothing too extreme like a Michael Bay film.
The film definitely delivers on the action and effects and that is all that matters when watching a movie like this.
While this movie is based on a comic book series, the comic book is not very mainstream, and a lot of people would think that this movie is just a remake of the 1995 film, when in reality, it is a reboot of the film, an entirely separate film. Many non-fans do not need to worry about if they were to watch it as any other action film.
They will still be entertained regardless of not knowing about the source material. This movie is for comic book fans as it is based on a comic book, as well as action fans general. Many action fans will enjoy the action scenes and there aren’t a lot of scenes that take a break from the action.
It is basically one long action sequence with scenes that only take a few minutes to get to the next action scene. Those who are looking for a deep and compelling plot should look elsewhere because none of that applies in this film.
