The Cosumnes River College Art Gallery hosted an opening reception on Sept. 6 for their new district faculty exhibition, showcasing the work of full-time art faculty from all four of the Los Rios colleges.
The exhibition was organized by Professor Robin Johnson, chair of the art department at CRC. She said the exhibition helps build a greater sense of community within the district’s campuses.
“What I really wanted to do is to allow the students to see what we’re doing at the colleges, and also get exposure to the other colleges, so if there’s a faculty that they might be interested in taking a class with at another college,” Johnson said.
Mark Boguski, chair of the art department at Sacramento City College, said the exhibition showcases the many possibilities of creating art.
The gallery was filled with a variety of different art forms including paintings, ceramic pieces, moving sculptures, photography and a mural piece.
“I hope that students give themselves permission to try to mix media and to push scale in their work,” said Gioia Fonda, an SCC art professor.
Fonda created a long, colorful mural that was draped along the roof of the gallery, using multiple prints, patterns and spray paint. Catching the eye of many spectators, her mural was one of the more popular art pieces among the exhibition.
Johnson said she’s engaging with young and working artists while figuring out how she can continue to bring art to the community.
“I like to get my artwork out in the public, it’s fun to have a goal and to make things crucial,” said Boguski.
Johnson said she hoped to have a district faculty exhibition next fall with all the part-time or adjunct faculty within the district.
The exhibition continues through Oct. 3 and is open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., or with an appointment.
