Cosumnes River College’s concert band and orchestra held a spotlight performance on the fountain stage on Monday in order to attract attention to joining the concert band.
Joining the band were three contemporary choir vocalists who sang along with select pieces, and also performed multiple solos.
The band performed four pieces, including “At Last” by Etta James, where they encouraged the audience to sing along.
The half hour performance was led by Professor Maxwell Kiesner, department chair of music.
Kiesner said one of the best things about teaching at CRC is he’s able to “stretch the limitations” of what they can and can’t do with a band.
Some pieces were led by three different student conductors. Kiesner said he does this because he loves to give students opportunities he never had as a student.
Tia Kilpatrick, a 44-year-old undeclared major who joined the band for personal fulfillment, said she urges everyone to join the band, and performances such as this are recruitment events more than anything.
“Even if you haven’t played for a long time, that’s okay, there is something for you,” Kilpatrick said.
On the fourth piece of the performance, Kiesner asked for an audience volunteer to help conduct the band. Jianna Eugenio, a 27-year-old music major, volunteered and led the band through the music.
On her way up the stage she said she was willing to give it a shot, but she didn’t know what she was doing.
Kiesner finished off the performance by urging the audience to come to performances and try out for the band. He said there will be something for every person.
“It’s really rewarding as a band when we find something that really works for us, that really works for all of us,” Kiesner said.
