The Makerspace at Cosumnes River College is a craft space with multiple pieces of equipment for students to use and create different projects.
The space includes equipment such as a woodcutter, 3D printers and a water jet. It also contains a woodworking room and a textile room with sewing and embroidery machines for students to use.
“We opened the space in 2020,but had to shut down almost immediately after because of the pandemic,” said engineering Professor Eric Anderson, the current manager of the space. “We re-opened the space in 2022 and we’ve just been trying to get it ready for all students to use.”
The Makerspace is open to anyone who is a student of CRC.
“What we have is a QR code that takes you to a Canvas page where we have modules for every machine in the space,” Anderson said. “Once you finish the readings and complete the quiz, you can come back into the space and get certified to use the machines under supervision.”
Few students use the space and equipment, said Anthony Nguyen, a lab tech at the Makerspace
“We really see the Curiosity & Engineering Club coming to use the space during the week,” Nguyen said.
Learning a new skill is just part of the fun there is to be had at the Makerspace. Mahima Srinivas, a student assistant at the space, enjoys using the space and meeting new people.
“I enjoy getting to help students using the machines in the space,” Srinivas said. “Being an assistant here, I get to talk to new people and see what interesting projects they are working on in the space.”
The Makerspace staff is especially encouraging new students to come use the space.
“We have something for everybody here,” Srinivas said. “Come down and learn something new, we’re here for you!”
The CRC Makerspace is located at in rooms T-116 and T-117, open Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“No matter what your background or major is, we are welcoming all students to come learn a new skill with us and enjoy our space,” Anderson said.
