The band Preview Only showcased their sound on Nov. 27 in the Recital Hall at 12 p.m. to anyone who wanted to listen and enjoy their music.
The band consists of five members: drummer Jacob Swedlow, bass player Tyler Miles, saxophonist Andrew Maloney, pianist Neil Heaton and trumpet player Thomas Molina.
During the showcase, they played a variety of jazz songs written by each band member.
They hoped the audience could feel the emotion and connect with each song, Swedlow said.
“The power of coming together with an audience and enjoying the same thing at the same time, whether that’s music or just coming together, it’s just the power of that shared experience,” Heaton said. “It’s something that you can’t get by yourself, and with music, you hear things differently when you’re in a room with others rather than by yourself using headphones.”
The name Preview Only came from an old friend who was a director of a big band at the concert they were at, and he had a catalog of all the scores of the bands performing, Miles said.
On that catalog, there was a red stamp that said “preview only” since the director didn’t want to buy the catalog with the full scores and the band mates thought it was funny and decided to pick that as their name, Miles said.
The compositions they write have their own unique voice and they only play a few events each year, said Maloney
“Our sounds all mold to everyone’s own personal sound when it comes to the tunes they have written for the group,” Maloney said.
The Preview Only band started about a year ago and is mostly just a side band since they enjoy playing together, but they have their own main music projects that they work on, Maloney said.
They come together to perform as much as they can when they all have an opening in their schedules, Maloney said.
