Hawks defeat Solano in first game of the season
The Cosumnes River College women’s soccer team won their first game of the season against Solano Community College on Aug. 28.
The Hawks ended up dominating the field over Solano, who the Hawks had beaten in the first round of the playoffs last season, with a score of 3-0.
“The team played well for the first game,” said Head Coach Cesar Plasencia. “But there were a lot of missed opportunities.”
The CRC Hawks had a total of 17 shots, nine of which were near goal misses. Some of those shots came from Hawks co-captain Erica Lim.
“The weather affected the way we played during the first half,” Lim said. “Overall though it was a pretty solid start for the first game.”
Solano came out quite strong during the second half of the game rapidly getting to the other side of the field and getting a shot on goal. The Hawks quickly resumed their dominance on the field with another goal from Lim and a penalty kick from Ariel Klink.
There were a few downed players out on the field, one of them being Lim. Because Solano lost to CRC last year in the playoffs, there was quite a bit of tension between the teams, Lim said. There were no yellow cards given out during the match but one could see the aggression some of the players had toward each other.
Plasencia also said the team is going to have a tough upcoming week playing Folsom Lake College and Fresno City College within the same week.
“We will overcome adversity and pick up the intensity,” said defender and co-captain Vanessa Curtis.
