The softball team took on Modesto Junior College at home in a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game started at 12 p.m. with the Hawks defeating the Pirates 13-1.

The second game at 2 p.m. also ended in a shutout victory, with the final score 7-0.

The Hawks returned home from a two game road matchups against San Joaquin-Delta and Folsom Lake. The Pirates have been struggling and are sitting in last place in the Big 8.

“I thought that they did a decent job as a team, they always stayed up together, and they stayed positive and I really admire that,” outfielder Cassandra Thomas said.

Hawks pitcher Ashleigh Berg was the starting pitcher. She played all seven innings and almost threw a no hitter, but the Pirates end her streak by getting a hit in the fifth inning.

Berg was off to a strong start in the first inning by making it a scoreless inning.

“I just need to keep working on hitting my spots, and working my spins and we’ll be okay,” Berg said.

Center Fielder Amber Wright scored the first point of the game for the Hawks in the bottom of the first inning after first baseman/midfielder Ashlee Kaiser hit a line drive single. Kaiser scored the second point after third baseman Taelor Ford hits a single into mid field.

After the first inning, the score was 2-0 with the Hawks up front.

Pirates pitcher Isis Figueroa Perez had her struggles by allowing a total of 11 hits.

“I know they’ve been struggling in league, athlete wise, I didn’t think they were too bad, but they struggled hitting obviously,” Schroeder said. “Our pitcher pitched well, so we just got to come out and play who ever is there and do the best that we can.”

In the bottom of the third inning, with two Hawks on base, Kaiser and second baseman/center Veronica Smith, right fielder Cecilia Rivera hit a single into center field and Kaiser and Smith both scored.

This extended their lead 4-0.

The Hawks were taking a commanding lead, and with high energy and execution the Pirates were still fighting back.

“I love the energy that we bring, especially we’re up at bat and with the chants and cheers I just love to hear my teammates,” Cassandra said.

Bottom of the fourth inning, Thomas on base scored a point after split squad Korina Krueg hit a single to centerfield. Then with Krueg on base, Ford hit a double to left field that allowed Krueg to score a point.

After four innings the Hawks scored seven points, and the Pirates were falling behind.

For the next three innings neither teams could score, and the Pirates had opportunities to score a point. However, the Hawks prevented them with their defense and Berg’s pitching.

In the seventh and final inning, there was still time for the Pirates to score a point in this game, but Berg prevented them.

The Pirates had two players on base, but from a single hit Berg recorverd the ball and threw it to first base. That ended the game and making it the final score 7-0.

“We hit the ball pretty well and was able to get everybody involved, so it’s nice when we can get full team effort and having a great day,” Schroeder said.
