Hawks come up short in close conference game
The Hawks’ softball team fought hard but came just short of victory in their game against American River College Beavers on Tues..
The game took place on the Cosumnes River College softball field, with the Hawks taking on the Beavers in a closely contested game. This also marks the ninth game the Hawks have played in the Big 8 conference.
“I love the way we fought today,” said Head Coach Kristy Schroeder. “We’re just right there, we just need to get over that hump.”
The game started well for the Hawks, with the team managing to take a 2-1 lead against the Beavers in the first two innings. These runs were scored by freshman infielder Leandra Coronado and freshman outfielder Alyssa Pinto.
By the end of the fifth though, the Beavers had a significant 7-3 lead over the Hawks.
The Hawks managed to bring things back in the sixth inning , managing to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth while preventing the Beavers from scoring in the top, cutting the deficit to one run.
“We fought really hard, but were slow to start,” said sophomore pitcher Becky Pedersen. “We need work on rallying a bit sooner.”
In the seventh inning the Hawks scored one more run, tying the score up at 7-7,leading to two extra innings. The Beavers managed to score one last run in the ninth, with a final score of 8-7 over the Hawks. .
Schroeder said that while the team could have done better at the plate, overall they all played well. Some players she pointed out for their performance were Coronado and freshman pitcher Danielle Pfenning, who scored the run that tied the game up.
“Everyone had a moment where they did something awesome,” said freshman infielder Mckinzee Spriggs.
Spriggs said the team would continue to work hard in training, and try to “not get comfortable where we are now.” One of the key things she said they would work on would be their batting.
Due to the shutdown of the Los Rios Community College District, the Hawks’ season is currently postponed until further notice.
