The women’s soccer team took on the Cabrillo Community College Seahawks at home on Tuesday and won 6-0, displaying a clinic of dominance.
Head coach Cesar Plasencia said lopsided victories are never expected, but teams hope to play well and the Hawks scored enough goals to reflect their performance.
“Our objective is just to get better at what we train to do and today we weren’t clean in the first 20, 25,” Plasencia said. “We were pretty sloppy and consequently we couldn’t get enough goals and then we kind of figured it out the second part of the first half.”
Plasencia said they were able to create separation in play, but not on the scoreboard until the second half. He said 2-0 can be a dangerous score to hold.
“You throw that ball in front of the goal, good things will happen eventually,” Plasencia said. “We thought we had control of the game with having more of the ball and creating chances, getting in front of the ball and sometimes it happens like that where we get a little bit of luck there and the ball rolls in the net.”
Freshman forward Sadie Stoll scored two goals for the Hawks and said she had the mindset of taking on opponents one versus one.
“A big win like this after a tie that we had last week against a really good team, it definitely boosts our confidence,” Stoll said. “It makes us all want to work harder and achieve again a game like this today, so I think it will give us some encouragement against Cañada to just work as hard as we did today to keep finishing.”
Sophomore center-back Nichole Morris said the team had been working on passes all week and organizing their space, but felt rusty in the first half. She said she was still able to connect and get the ball in the net, scoring another goal for Cosumnes River College to add to their lead.
“I saw the corner and for me, I told myself, ‘I’m going to get on the end of this. I’ve got to get it in,’” Morris said. “And so, I saw that it was kind of towards the ground and I said, ‘Okay,’ ran towards it and then thank God, I kind of just tapped it in exactly where I wanted it.”
Morris said the expectation for Friday’s game is a lot higher, especially after winning 6-0. She said it will also be her birthday and she is playing to win.
The Hawks play the Cañada Community College Colts on Friday in Redwood City and their record is 4-2-1 after Tuesday’s victory over Cabrillo. The Colt’s record going into Friday’s game is 4-1-2 after tying with the Diablo Valley College Vikings on Tuesday.
