The women’s basketball team beat the Foothill College Owls 97-36 in a decisive victory on Friday at home during their annual Calamar Classic Tournament.
The Hawks lost their previous game on Thursday against Victor Valley College 73-55, but bounced back for Friday’s game. They stayed ahead of Foothill each quarter by hustling and communicating with one another for the duration of the game.
“Honestly I think we prepped our mindsets before prepping physically, so we know what we are heading into,” said freshman guard and forward Ariel Bailey. “But it’s really just locking in mentally when it comes to our team. If we aren’t there mentally, then we aren’t going to perform well.”
Throughout the game, the Hawks had many defensive steals that allowed for fastbreak layups, adding points to the board. They also had many offensive rebounds, putting the ball back up or passing it out to reset the offense.
“The team played great together. They are sharing the ball very well and our defense is looking great right now,” said assistant coach Brittany Shine. “We just really want to carry this energy into December.”
In the third quarter, there was a buzzer beater layup by sophomore guard LaKayla Hale. With a defensive steal, she got the ball up the court and scored, putting the Hawks further ahead.
Hale said she enjoys giving her teammates a chance and multiple opportunities to succeed, so when the season comes, they are prepared.
“I think I really got my teammates involved and I’m trying to get my other teammates involved, so that they can get comfortable with the ball, so that when we get in the league, when people apply pressure to us it won’t be a surprise,” Hale said.
The tournament is named after the Assistant Athletic Director, Jeanne Calamar, who also used to coach the women’s basketball team from 1989 until 2002. She is now the Big 8 Conference Commissioner.
The Hawks traveled on Wednesday to play against Skyline College at 3 p.m, winning 63-52.
