The men’s basketball team remains undefeated at home after a strong performance at the 45th annual James Clark Classic.
The Hawks defeated the Shasta College Knights 61-55 on Friday in their second game of the tournament.
Freshman guard Mason Marsh led the team with 20 points and said the team should have come away with more points.
“Kind of how I see it, after a game like that, we know we should have won by more,” Marsh said. “So, we’re more hungry for the next game. We just have to be prepared to stay together as a team and contribute.”
The Hawks scored a season-low 61 points during the game but still managed to defeat the Knights.
The team had a strong defensive game with 39 rebounds, eight coming from sophomore forward Brian Unachukwu and nine steals, four coming from freshman guard Kainoa Marasco.
Head coach Jonathan James said the team will stay resilient after two of their players went down with lower body injuries.
“We’re a band of brothers, and that gives us fuel to go,” James said. “So, it’s gonna impact us, but we’re resilient, and we’ll figure out a way to be ready to go for tomorrow.”
Freshman guard Broyce Batchan said the team was swaying away from their game plan and had to change something coming into the second half.
“We kind of got away from our scout. We had a little check box that we go into at halftime and check off,” Batchan said. “So, half of the boxes were checked, but some of them weren’t. We just tried to come out of the first half and follow that scout.”
Batchan said the team can’t get lost in their success and they can’t take every game lightly.
“It’s good to see our record roll up, but we can’t pay too much attention to it because we’d get lost in it,” Batchan said. “We just got to work our way up every day, every game.”
The Hawks defeated College of the Siskiyous 91-40 on Saturday in their final game of the James Clark Classic. The team is set to face the Solano College Falcons on Dec. 14 at home and look to extend their home winning streak to six in a row.
