Hawks defeat the Mendocino Eagles
The Hawks baseball team met the Mendocino Eagles on Thursday and came out with a solid win, 9-4.
Sophomore pitcher Owen Hunt, out of Folsom High School, got the start on the mound, striking out five, giving up only two hits and no runs in five innings pitched.
The defense wasn’t the only thing working as the Hawks got on the board early in their first at-bats. With a runner on, Freshman infielder Bryson McArn crushed an inside fastball to deep right field and over the fence for a two run homer.
“It felt pretty good, I got a good pitch to hit, you know not trying to do too much,” McCarn said. “Just staying true to myself, being confident.”
Center fielder Sophomore Brett Graber also contributed to the Hawks offense, hitting two doubles during the game.
Head Coach Don Mico noted even though they came out with a victory from this game, the game of baseball is tough.
“This is not an easy game, it’s tough, and it beats everyone up, so these guys just need to learn to play the game the right way,” Mico said. “Hopefully things turn out good for us this year.”
“I felt good about how we played, we had pretty good energy in the dugout throughout the game,” Graber said.
Graber noted how this year’s team is a young team, however, he said they have a strong bond.
“Honestly that was the biggest thing we emphasized during the Fall, just being a family and spending as much time together as possible, and building that bond,” Graber said. “I have full faith in these guys to get us a W from day-to-day.”
Mico said the team has a lot to learn, especially being so young, they have a lot of experience to gather.
“These guys are learning to play the game right now,” Mico said. “We’re a young team so that’s what basically the whole Fall was about.”
