The men’s basketball team improved their record to 4-2 overall, putting an end to a two game skid with their victory over the 7-3 Feather River Golden Eagles during a high-scoring game at home on Tuesday.
The Hawks held a 62-29 lead to end the first period of play, with a majority of the points coming from freshman guard Kainoa Morasco, who scored a team high of 27 points.
“This was personal,” Morasco said. “We lost two games back to back. We knew that we had to make an adjustment.”
The most important thing ahead of the game for the Hawks was to not lose on home court, said head coach Jonathan James.
“This is the first of a six game homestand, so we wanted to win this first one and set the tone for the rest of our games,” James said.
The Hawks forced 25 turnovers in the game, a factor that helped them control the flow of the game, sophomore guard Luca Davis said.
“Defensively, that’s where we took over the game,” Davis said. “We were getting what we wanted by being patient. Our pressure sped them up and they weren’t able to get any shots up.”
Sophomore forward Brian Unachukwu led the Hawks with eight rebounds. Freshman guard Mason Marsh scored 15 points with 11 coming in the first period of play.
The team started their bye week on Nov. 27 where they plan to build off the success of this game, James said.
The Hawks will face off against the Lassen College Cougars at home on Thursday, the last place team in the Golden Valley Conference.
The game will take place as part of the 45th annual James Clark Classic at 5 p.m.
“We’re watching film of the games we lost to further correct those things,” James said. “Lots of free throw shooting and just running our offense. It’s all about getting better at this time of year.”
