The men’s basketball team added another win to their five game winning streak, beating the Diablo Valley College Vikings 74-67 on Thursday.
The Hawks played a dominant game despite missing players, with them leading by 14 points at the end of the first quarter and seven by the end of the second.
Sophomore guard Devon Hayes said everyone was fighting, but they still came up on top.
“I feel like we did good, we got like seven players, so everyone was gassed playing through fatigue, but I feel like we did pretty good,” Hayes said.
The Hawks played defensively well, making a total of 17 turnovers and 40 rebounds.
“A lot of guys really showed up and rose to the occasion that we had to play in,” said freshman forward Jake Williams.
The Vikings inched their way back into the game by the second quarter, gaining seven points to bring the score to a close 44-37, but the Hawks closed that gap by gaining four points and two foul shots to bring the score to 50-40.
Playing hard and correcting mistakes is a recipe for success, head coach Jonathan Jones said.
“It’s not taking us two and three possessions to fix it,” Jones said. “We’re fixing it in the moment, which is always good.”
The last stretch of the game was tight, with the Vikings and the Hawks going head to head with turnovers, but the Hawks still pushed through to stay in the lead.
“We’re able to come together and get the win, and I feel like that’s what we do best,” sophomore forward Brian Unachukwu said.
This game ends the regular season, moving the Hawks into the postseason.
The Hawks now gear up to face a rematch with Sierra College Wolverines on Friday at Sierra College.
