With two 5-0 wins, the beach volleyball team overcame the College of the Siskiyous Eagles and the College of Marin Mariners in Friday’s doubleheader games.
In the first game, the Hawks kept the Eagles below 15 points per set, defeating them by the same scoreline as their first matchup on Feb. 21.
The Hawks got a little taste of conference play in their second game as they defeated conference rivals, the Mariners.
“We absolutely dominated in a majority of our matches today,” said head coach Kari Nahlen. “We just took care of business, it was really fun to see everyone just click on all cylinders today.”
The Hawks have only lost one of their last eight games and now carry a five-game winning streak.
Nahlen said during the week the team had been working on a lot of defensive drills and learning to see the other side of the net.
Sophomore split Kaylie Reyes had a defensively sound game, blocking the Mariners’ offensive efforts on many occasions throughout the match.
Reyes and her partner, sophomore split Cassidy Pham, both said they feel thrills when performing successful blocks as they both feel like underdogs, due to them both being splits and short. Both Reyes and Pham also highlighted their communication and aggressive serves.
Sophomore blocker Abigail Siever said her and her partner, sophomore split Jordyn Kwalwasser, were off to a rough start because their passing was off and they committed unforced errors their opponents capitalized on.
“We always kind of have a little slow start and we just moved up rankings,” said Kwalwasser. “So a slow start with a better team usually doesn’t spell greatness.”
Kwalwasser said for the second set, she was able to reset and lock-in on the passing. For Kwalwasser, this shifted the momentum of the game in their favor, something they were able to control for the rest of the game.
“I think we’re putting ourselves in a good spot to make the playoffs, as long as we continue the streak we are in,” Nahlen said.
The Hawks begin conference play on Friday, hosting a rematch against College of Marin at 1 p.m.
