The last event for Women’s History Month was held Thursday at Cosumnes River College’s Center for Inclusion and Belonging. The event was a “SereniTEA Session” that featured a yoga and guided affirmations course alongside free tea.
CRC’s Wellness Advocate Akaysia Hill ran the yoga lesson for the event, while some of the members of the Women’s History Committee prepared tea for attendees.
“As college kids, sometimes it’s stressful dealing with classes and schedules, so it’s really nice to have sessions like this,” said Athena Singh, a 19-year-old business administration major. “Yoga is just breathing exercises and stretching, and sometimes you just need to step back and just breathe.”
The event began with soothing music while attendees gathered their yoga mats and chose their places for the session.
“I personally was having a bad day in the morning, but I feel like stretching with someone guiding you and taking those deep breaths leaves me with the ability to take on the rest of the day,” said Sabrina Melo Chew, a student support assistant at the CIB.
The yoga session itself was a 45-minute session of stretching and positive affirmations from Hill.
“I wanted to bring a different method outside of therapy or just talking about what’s wrong, but actually engaging in an activity that brings you some peace of mind and stillness. I’m very glad that people liked it and participated,” Hill said.
After the session was over, the group was invited to help themselves to an assortment of different teas, stickers and flyers.
“I think these events would be very beneficial if we could host them a lot more often,” Melo Chew said. “We as an institution at CRC have a responsibility to help our students and give them support, we want students to come out and have a good time.”
